Kirkin' O the Tartan

Sunday, October 31, 2021 - 10:00am

A "Kirkin' O the Tartan", or just "Kirkin'" is a traditional Scottish Presbyterian Worship Service, often incorporating bagpipes and drums into the service. This Reformation Sunday, it is a great opportunity to celebrate both the Scottish traditions and Reformed heritage. Following the service, we will be having a "Shortbread Social".

At the close of the service, there will be a moment considered for a "Blessing of the Tartans". Due to the 1747 Act of Proscription, the wearing of highland garb was prohibited (particularly the kilt) and while the tartans themselves were not particularly banned, with the principal use of the cloth disallowed, their association with "Highland ways" saw them disappear from the public view. However, the story goes that rebellious Scots would bring pieces of tartan cloth with them, in secret, and holding or rubbing them during the Benediction to receive a blessing for their families.

Everyone is welcome to worship with us this Sunday! Wear your family tartan and kilts if you have them; otherwise, still come to glorify God and celebrate our past and our families.
